Stearic Acid
It is a long-chain saturated fatty acid (C18) typically derived from plant (such as palm or coconut oil) or animal sources, and is widely used in the cosmetics industry as a functional ingredient to improve texture and consistency. It is found in the form of white, waxy flakes or a nearly odorless powder.
In cosmetic formulations, stearic acid acts as a thickener and structural improver, and it also contributes to the formation and stabilization of emulsions when it reacts with alkalis (such as in the formation of mineral soaps in some systems). It is characterized by good stability, gentleness on the skin when used correctly, and broad compatibility with oils and fatty alcohols.
Benefits
- It improves the texture of cosmetics and gives them a suitable consistency.
- It contributes to the stability of oil/water emulsions.
- It gives a creamy texture and a comfortable feel on the skin.
- It supports the structure of solid and semi-solid products.
- Compatible with most oils, butters, and fatty alcohols
How to use
- Manufacturing stage: Oil phase
- Temperature: Requires thermal melting (approximately 65–75°C)
- pH range: Not sensitive to pH itself
- Stylistic notes:
- It is often used with emulsifiers or fatty alcohols to improve stability.
- In some systems (such as shaving creams), it may react with alkalis to form a supporting soap structure.
- Adjusting the ratio directly affects the hardness and texture.
Recommended ratios
- Face and body creams and lotions: 1% – 5%
- Thick or rich products: 3% – 10%
- Soaps and specialty products: according to the formulation system
- The maximum recommended amount for cosmetic use depends on the type of product and the desired consistency.
Melting
- Water: Insoluble
- Glycolates: Insoluble
- Oils: Soluble when heated
- Notes: It acts as a structural component in the oil phase and requires appropriate emulsification in aqueous formulations.
Applications
- Skin care creams and lotions
- Body butters and rich lotions
- shaving creams
- Soaps and solid cleaning products
- Makeup products (as a texture enhancer)
Storage
- Store in a tightly sealed container.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
- Chemically stable under normal storage conditions
- Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
Organizational notes:
- For cosmetic use only
- Permitted in accordance with EU legislation and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA)
- It is used as a technical component to improve texture and firmness, not as a therapeutic agent.
